How are Springs Manufactured? The Engineering Behind the Force

In almost every mechanical assembly, springs are the unsung heroes. From automotive suspensions to delicate medical instruments, these components store and release energy with precision. But have you ever wondered how springs are manufactured to maintain such high durability?

The production of high-quality Flat Springs and Wire Springs is a blend of metallurgy, precision CNC machining, and controlled heat treatment. Let’s break down the process.

Step 1: Strategic Material Selection.

The lifespan of a spring begins with its DNA—the material. As a leading spring manufacturer, we select alloys based on the application’s stress environment:

High Carbon Steel Strip: The go-to for Power Springs and Spiral Springs, offering a perfect balance of strength and cost.

SUS301/316 Stainless Steel: Essential for constant force springs used in medical or outdoor environments where corrosion resistance is critical.

Alloy Steel: Reserved for high-temperature industrial springs that require extreme fatigue resistance.

Step 2: The Forming Process (Flat vs. Round).

The manufacturing method bifurcates depending on whether we are dealing with flat wire or round wire.

  1. Manufacturing Flat Springs (The Powerhouse)
For Custom Flat Springs, we use specialized high-speed stamping and winding machines.

Precision Slitting: The spring steel strip is slit to exact widths.
CNC Winding: The flat material is fed into a CNC winder to create Constant Force Springs or Retractable Cord Reel Springs. This process requires immense tension control to ensure the “memory” of the steel is consistent throughout the coil. Manufacturing Wire Springs (The Classic)
For Compression and Torsion Springs, we utilize multi-axis CNC spring formers. The wire is cold-coiled around a mandrel, with the computer controlling the pitch, diameter, and active coils to meet the exact spring rate required.

Step 3: Heat Treatment & Stress Relieving.

This is the most critical “hidden” step. After coiling, every spring has internal stresses. Heat treatment (tempering) re-aligns the molecular structure. For a Power Spring, precise temperature control ensures it doesn’t become brittle or lose its “push” after a few hundred cycles.

Step 4: Finishing & Quality Audits

To ensure the springs survive harsh environments, we apply various surface treatments:

Shot Peening: Bombarding the surface with tiny steel shot to compress the outer layer, significantly increasing fatigue life.

Electrophoresis & Plating: Providing a barrier against rust and chemicals.

Force Testing: Every batch undergoes load-deflection testing to ensure it meets the client’s torque and force specifications.
