We make custom springs for cord and cable retraction mechanisms, working from drawings, samples or the required motion. We match the spring design to the pull force, return travel and space inside your reel.
Spring position inside the reel
We match the spring’s size and end attachments to the housing and central hub. In this example, the coiled strip spring is visible inside the open housing, beside the cord outlet. The closed view shows how the same mechanism is enclosed.

We customise the spring component to suit your mechanism. These photographs show a spring application example.
How the spring returns the cord
When the cord is pulled out, the drum turns against the spring. The spring then supplies the torque needed to return the cord. Drum diameter, cable build-up, guide friction and the return path all affect the pull felt at the cord.
We customise spring components for vacuum cleaner cord reels and retractable data cables. Send the reel drawing or a sample so we can review the spring mounting, attachments and working turns with you.
Set the travel and return force
Tell us the required pull or return force at the start, middle and end of the cord travel, including the units and acceptable range. If you specify torque at the spring shaft instead, pair each torque value with its angle or number of turns. Include installed preload and the travel stops so we can define the spring’s working range.
Choose the spring around your reel
Start with our retractable cord reel spring range. We can also assess a power spring construction against your torque, working turns and housing dimensions. We use the output needed at the cord and the drum geometry to define the spring requirement.
What to send for a quote
- Cord travel, cord size and usable drum geometry.
- Pull or return force at stated positions, or torque at stated shaft angles, with units.
- Arbor diameter, housing inside diameter, depth and clearances.
- Inner and outer spring attachments, winding direction and installed preload.
- Guides, friction points, travel stops and the intended return behaviour.
- Operating environment, target duty, sample quantity and production quantity.
Working from an existing sample
Send the spring or reel sample, photos and mating dimensions, together with the performance you want. If you are replacing a worn spring, tell us whether it leaves the cord partly extended, pulls too hard or has an attachment problem. We can use the sample to review fit and geometry, then confirm the target return force and working travel with you.
Send us your reel requirements
A reel drawing, mechanism photo or sample is enough to start. Add the required travel, pull force or torque, and the quantities you expect. We will identify any missing dimensions with you before confirming the spring design and quotation.
